Our oenologists' opinion

Fruity and well-rounded

Garnet colour with a purple sheen. Nice frank nose, with candied raspberry and fresh spices, opening on floral and plum notes. Supple attack of fullness and balance. Straightforward character, on candied red fruit, round tannins. Clear and persistent finish, of finesse.

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Domain and appellation

Situated in the meanders of the Lot valley, Clos La Coutale produces wines with an international reputation. The American magazine Wine Spectactor notably ranked it among the 100 best wines in the world in 2009.

Terroir : Stretching over 90 hectares between oceanic and continental influences, with a soil made up of gravel, silica clay and limestone, the vineyard is mainly planted with Malbec (locally called Auxerrois) . Its micro-climate and geological formation allow the production of wines with good ageing potential. Viticulture: The vines are on average 35 years old with a simple seven-eye guyot pruning. Yields are average with a production of 45 hectolitres per hectare so as to allow the fruit to express all its intensity.
Vinification: The plots are vinified separately in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats with pumping over and punching down, then partially aged in oak barrels.
