Our oenologists' opinion

Powerful bouquet

The straightforward nose opens with a bouquet of spices and roasted wood, accompanied by liquorice notes and a coulis of ripe black fruit.

The supple, round attack reveals a strong woody character, with aromas of mocha and roasted black fruit, enhanced by a hint of menthol that adds freshness and complexity.

The lingering, elegant finish continues this beautiful harmony of wood, spices and black fruit, making for a warm, refined tasting experience.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Domain and appellation

  • MARQUÉS DE CÁCERES

Founded in 1970 by Enrique Forner, upon his return to Spain after his family’s exile in France and after owning a Grand Cru Classé in Haut-Médoc, Marqués de Cáceres remains firmly committed to a high-end approach.

Advised by some of the most renowned wine experts, including Professor Émile Peynaud at its inception and Michel Rolland today, this family-run estate has helped establish Rioja as one of the world’s most prestigious wine appellations.

In this spirit, the EXCELLENS collection was launched in 2014, offering a selection of exclusive wines tailored for fine dining establishments, delicatessens, and wine merchants (exclusively available at Nicolas). Its flagship wine is the Excellens Reserva.

This wine is meticulously sourced from 25 hectares of vineyards in the Rioja Alta sub-region, at an altitude of 500 to 600 metres. The vines, aged 40 to 45 years, are planted on hills with clay-limestone, iron-rich, and gravelly soils, benefiting from a temperate Atlantic climate.
