Our oenologists' opinion

Powerful bouquet

Its amber colour has a clean, pleasant aroma, with subtle notes of smoked citrus. Mild and pleasant taste-wise, this whiskey is gourmand, with a sweet / salty base. Its intensity is revealed gradually and then gives way to the peaty flavours. Adding water reveals its marine side. A delicious mix of sweetness, bitterness and smoke.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Moch (pronounced "Morr") means "dawn" in Gaelic.

Domain and appellation

  • Caol Ila

Founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson, the Caol Ila distillery is now owned by the Diageo group.

    • Distillery: Rebuilt in 1972, Caol Ila is located on the banks of the strait, near Port Askaig, a place originally chosen because of the purity of the water from Loch Nam Ban, which is still its main source.
