Our oenologists' opinion

Well-rounded

The nose is open and frank, with notes of blackcurrant, blueberry and cocoa bean, underlined by a hint of peppermint.

The attack is full-bodied, supported by long tannins and a fine structure.

The wine reveals an assertive character of candied blackcurrant and dark chocolate, with good balance.

Fleshy finish, with a hint of sapid bitterness, medium persistence, typical wine.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Domain and appellation

  • CLOS LA COUTALE

Clos La Coutale – A globally acclaimed Cahors wine

Nestled in the winding valleys of the Lot region, Clos La Coutale produces wines with a global reputation. In 2009, Wine Spectator ranked it among the Top 100 wines in the world.

    Terroir:
Spanning 100 hectares, the estate enjoys a unique microclimate between oceanic and continental influences. The soil is composed of gravel and clay-limestone siliceous elements, ideal for crafting age-worthy wines. The primary grape variety is Malbec, locally known as Auxerrois.

    Viticulture:
The vines average 35 years of age and are pruned in a single Guyot style with seven buds. Yields are kept moderate (45 hl/ha) to ensure the full expression of the fruit’s intensity.

    Winemaking:
Each plot is vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with pump-overs and punch-downs, followed by partial ageing in large oak casks.

2022 marks the estate’s first certified organic vintage.
