Our oenologists' opinion

Powerful bouquet

Dense, opaque, brilliant purple colour with black garnet highlights; open nose with notes of roasted wood, smoke and red fruit grapes; velvety, fleshy, roasted attack, fairly firm but ripe tannins, to be aged. Character of cocoa, roasted wood and plum in brandy. Powerful, satiny, roasted red fruit finish. Fairly good balance.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Domain and appellation

  • Château de Parenchère

Located in the extreme east of Bordeaux, on the edge of the Dordogne, Château de Parenchère is a vast 188-hectare estate whose origins date back to 1570 and which has been hailed by numerous guides as the "safe bet" of "Petits Bordeaux" thanks to its unfailing consistency.

Terroir: The 70-hectare vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soil with a predominance of clay, giving the wine power and freshness. Situated on slopes and benefiting from an adequate exposure, the plots are ideally drained for an optimum maturation of the fruit.

Viticulture: To produce this prestigious Raphaël cuvée, only the oldest vines on the estate, averaging 40 years old and coming from the best plots on the estate, have been used. Yields are low in order to guarantee concentrated and fruity wines.

Vinification: A one-week cold pre-fermentation maceration precedes fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. This stage brings out the fruity side of the wine. Cuvée Raphaël is then aged for 14 months in oak barrels from the famous Tronçais forest in the Allier region. 40% of these barrels are new.
