Our oenologists' opinion

Fruity and well-rounded

The nose is bold and intense, characterised by aromas of black fruit coulis infused with brandy, candied redcurrants and cooked prunes.

It then opens up to reveal notes of candied blackcurrants, redcurrants, herbs and cocoa.

The attack is full-bodied, supported by a lovely balance.

The mid-palate is clean and rich, prolonging the flavours of candied black fruits.

The finish is good, with a delicious aftertaste of candied morello cherries.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Domain and appellation

This ‘late bottled’ port is the most popular style of port in England and Canada, accounting for a fifth of port consumption in the United Kingdom and over a quarter of Canadian consumption.

Like classic vintage port, LBV is also made from a selection of the finest wines from a single year.

The fundamental difference between the two styles lies in the ageing process. Whilst the classic vintage spends only around 20 months in wood before continuing to age in the bottle, the LBV, as its name suggests, is bottled after four to six years of ageing in casks.

This longer contact with the wood structures and refines the wine, so that it is ready to drink as soon as it is bottled. It can be served straight from the bottle, without formal decanting, and keeps for several weeks after opening.
