Our oenologists' opinion

Well-rounded

The nose is open and frank, with plum and blueberry coulis, enhanced by a touch of acidity and a subtle hint of tonka bean.

On the palate, the attack is supple and satiny, with good tension, finesse and an elegant body.

The wine reveals a gourmet character, with red fruit gratin and sweet spices.

The finish is clean and balanced, prolonging the tasting experience with controlled tension, delicate finesse and medium persistence marked by candied pepper and a hint of fresh blackcurrant.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Domain and appellation

  • CHÂTEAU HOURTOU

A contrasting start to the winter, with alternating cool and mild spells. In April, an unprecedented spell of frost had a severe impact on the harvest.

A very wet spring, followed by a summer that was slow to take hold, cool on the whole and lacking in sunshine. At the end of September, a rainy spell meant that we had to harvest the Merlot.

Fortunately, the return of plenty of sunshine just afterwards meant that the Cabernet-Sauvignon grapes reached optimum ripeness.

It was a vintage that demanded precision, responsiveness and observation, but which produced fresh, energetic wines marked by their straightforwardness.
