Our oenologists' opinion

Powerful wine with potential

Black colour with garnet highlights. Straightforward nose of spices, herbs, garrigue notes, candied red fruit. Full-bodied, fleshy attack. Long-lasting cocoa and candied black fruit flavours, round silky tannins, good balance, woodiness to mellow. Nice character, good persistence.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Domain and appellation

  • GÉRARD BERTRAND

Situated on an exceptional terroir within the qualitative La Livinière appellation, officially recognised in 1998 as synonymous with great Languedoc wines. This extraordinary terroir produces powerful, distinctive wines that have won countless awards. Benefiting from a semi-arid Mediterranean climate with a temperate winter variation, Le Viala faces due south on the upper slopes of the village of La Livinière at an altitude of around 120 metres. The soil consists of a mosaic of stripped marl, combined with calcareous sandstone and compact limestone dating from the Eocene, Tertiary era. This type of terroir naturally limits the production of each vine stock and, thanks to its deep roots, enables it to withstand low rainfall and water stress. The grapes also benefit from plenty of sunshine, helping them to ripen slowly. The three grape varieties blended for this cuvée bring out the complementary nuances of the unique Viala terroir.
