Our oenologists' opinion

Powerful bouquet

Bright old gold colour. Nose of soft caramel, milk chocolate, cherries in brandy, notes of dried spices, heather. Good balance on a full-bodied, straightforward whisky, more sweetness than body. Strong character with a drier finish of dried fruit and smoke.

  • Keeping level Ready to drink

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Do you know ?

Doublewood stands for Double Maturation. Two types of casks were used: traditional oak casks for an initial ageing period of 12 years, then European oak casks, which had previously contained Sherry, for 8 to 9 months.

Domain and appellation

  • The Balvenie

The only distillery in Scotland still to grow its own barley and use traditional malting floors, The Balvenie is the fruit of natural alchemy and age-old know-how. This 12-year-old single malt derives its special character from its double maturation. During ageing, it moves from a traditional oak cask to a first-fill sherry cask. Each of these stages gives the single malt particular qualities: the traditional casks soften it and accentuate its character, while the sherry casks give it roundness and fullness.
