Do you know ?
The cocktail known as a “Cuba Libre” refers to the battle cry of the army fighting for the liberation of Cuba during the war for independence that ended in 1878. Cola was introduced on the island by American troops. Very quickly, Cubans mixed it with Havana Club rum, and raised their glasses while shouting "Cuba Libre!" (“Free Cuba!”).
Domain and appellation
Havana Club International
Founded in 1878 by José Arechabala, the Havana Club brand makes its rums in Santa Cruz del Norte, Cuba. After the Cuban Revolution of 1959, the distillery was nationalized by the government, which forced the Arechabala family to emigrate to Spain and then to the United States. Since the 1990s, the Havana Club International brand has been sold by Pernod Ricard, following an agreement signed between the group and the Cuban government.
- Production: Havana Club Especial rum is a premium gold rum. It comes from the blend of several cuvees, aged up to five years in white oak barrels, combining the lightness of young crus and the intensity of older “rons” (rums).
