Our oenologists' opinion

Fruity and well-rounded

Dark garnet colour with ruby highlights. Clear nose of blackcurrant syrup and cherry gratin. Good balance, well-structured, frank. Character still dominated by coconut wood, ripe tannins. Frank finish, still young.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Domain and appellation

  • MAISON CASTEL

A typical Bordeaux grape variety, Merlot benefits from a Mediterranean climate in the Pays d'Oc, allowing it to assert its fleshy and fruity character. Wines made from Merlot are of high quality, with light tannins that can be enjoyed young or aged for several years. For its Merlot Grande Réserve, Maison Castel has selected the best plots in the Aude department in the Pays d'Oc Protected Geographical Indication. This department has a more contrasting Mediterranean climate with cooler nights, which results in later ripening and brings tension and freshness. It is in these later terroirs that Maison Castel observes, analyses and tastes the grapes from each plot almost daily in order to determine the best harvest date...
