Our oenologists' opinion

Powerful bouquet

Its dark garnet color offers a nice nose with woody and roasted notes then of pepper and licorice. On the palate, this wine is balanced and frank with soft tannins.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Do you know ?

Vineyards that have a higher planting density produce grapes that are highly concentrated in sugar and aromas. By competing against each other, the vines are “stressed” and get highly concentrated in sugar. The trend in vineyards is then to have a higher planting density.

Domain and appellation

  • Château Ferrande

Renovated at the end of the 19th century and acquired by the Castel family in 1992, nowadays this former manor house is at the cutting edge of technology.

    • Terroir: The 94 hectares vineyard lays on a graves-sand soil. Several grape varieties are cultivated: merlot, cabernet sauvignon, sémillon, and sauvignon.

    • Viticulture: The planting density is high with an average of 9000 plants per hectare in order to guarantee highly concentrated grapes.

    • Vinification: The vat room has a high-tech wine press that extracts juices slowly and smoothly. The technique adopted is different in function of the grape variety. The merlots are subjected to a process highlighting their fruity side. Meanwhile the process used for the cabernet sauvignon will focus on its structure. The fermentation is done controlling temperatures, between 28 to 30°C. The wines age for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, whose 30% are new.
