Our oenologists' opinion


This garnet-colored wine releases fragrances recalling the fresh spices, the prune, the blackcurrant and the garrigue. Plump, the attack unveils a good balance. Aromas of cocoa and liquorice leave space to a nice taste of candied black fruits. It is followed by spicy notes before the finish that is frank and persistent and has a great liquorice taste.



Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Do you know ?

This “black wine” was one of the Tsars’ most coveted ones. The high alcohol and sugar levels would have originated from a Quercy winegrower who would have add alcohol to its blend so it can resist the long trip up to Russia.

Domain and appellation

  • Clos La Coutale

    Located in the meandering slopes of the Lot valley, the Clos La Coutale “black,” white and rosé wine carry an international prestige. The american magazine “Wine Spectator” included the domain in its world’s 100 best wines classification.


    • Terroir: Spread across 60 hectares between oceanic and continental influences, the vineyard lays on a graves and siliceous clay-limestone soil. Its microclimate and geological cut are particularly conducive to the production of malbec.


    • Viticulture: The vines are 25 years old in average with a single to seven guyot training system. Yields are low with a production of 45 hectolitres per hectare in order to let the fruit reach a high intensity.


    • Vinification: The grapes are processed plot-by-plot , vinified in stainless steel tanks with pigeage prior to age in oak barrels or foudre (bigger types of barrels).
