Do you know ?
Originally, the LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) was born from the unsold barrels of Vintage Port. Finding no taker, the wines remained much longer in the barrels. In 1958, the IVDP (Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto) formalised this port to become a category in itself.
Domain and appellation
Quinta Do Noval
Located in the heart of the Douro, the Maison Quinta do Noval has seen many developments. In 1920, it introduced the concept of the Tawny with an indication of age (10 years, 20 years and 40 years). It was the first to launch a “Late Bottled Vintage" port, Quinta do Noval LBV 1954, and still continues to lead the way today with the exclusive unfiltered Single Vineyard LBV.
- Terroir: Quinta do Noval is the only historic Port maison that bears the name of its vineyard. The vines grow in schist soils interspersed with clay.
- Vinification: Developed like a Vintage Port, similarly Late Bottled Vintage has the typical features of one year. It is designed to be enjoyed as soon as it is bottled. The grapes are crushed by foot to obtain the must, and then ferment in la Quinta’s traditional stone vats called “lagares”. It is matured for at least 4 years in oak wood containers.
