Do you know ?
The origins of the eau-de-vie date back to the Middle Ages. At that time, the alchemists were trying to create an elixir of immortality. Made by distilling alembic fruit or wine, the elixir of life obviously did not have the desired effect. However, it was long attributed for medical properties.
Domain and appellation
Son and grand-son of wines negotiator, Etienne Brana founded in 1974, Brana distillery in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, in the Pays-Basque region. Since then, Brana family continues the tradition of winegrower-distiller-distributor with one objective: Quality.
- Terroir: Brana distillery has its own peartrees planted orchard located on slopes, and it constitutes a "cru" of its own. The plant secures thus an exceptional quality of brandy.
- Manufacturing: On reaching their highest maturation degree, pears are fermented in stainless steel vats under temperature control. Pear wine thereafter is kept in airproof vats so that no alteration occurs before the distillation process is started. Distillation is carried out in copper pot-stills of double-circulation, which process is rather slow but allows a superior quality of brandy. The brandy is stored in stainless steel vats. The quick evolution of the esters requires a constant checking and frequent tastings.
